The Location: Taconic Biosciences is seeking a Laboratory Technician Intern to join the Molecular Analysis & Health Diagnostic team in this full time, paid internship, at the Rensselaer, NY site.

Starting Pay: $20.00 per hour. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors. These factors include geographic location, experience, training, education, and local market conditions and could exceed the advertised salary range.

The Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm (some flexibility available)

The Internship
As a Laboratory Technician Intern in the Molecular Analysis/Health Diagnostics labs with Taconic Biosciences, one will be able to apply academic knowledge to real-world projects, refining laboratory skills, and contributing to meaningful process improvements. Working alongside experienced Molecular Analysis and Health Diagnostics scientists and technicians, the intern will learn about microbial and genetic diagnostics contributing original data for improvements of current testing protocols and development of new projects. Gaining proficiency in molecular and microbiology techniques, including PCR, next generation sequencing, extraction of nucleic acids, and microbial growth/plating, will expand the intern’s skillset desired for laboratory roles at biotechnology companies and graduate schools.

A Laboratory Technician Intern can expect to:
  • Train in current Standard Operating Procedures and gain proficiency in standard laboratory techniques including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, microbiology growth/plating, and operation of liquid handling instruments.
  • Perform experiments for a process improvement/new process in MA/HD with support from scientific advisors
  • Collaborate with supervisors and other lab staff to support goals of project(s) and contribute to team discussions and problem-solving
  • Network within the global organization

  • Participate in an end of summer presentation on the knowledge and skills you’ve obtained, with provided exposure to leadership.

Eligibility:
  • Must be enrolled in an academic program with minimum 1 semester completed in pursuit of an Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or PhD, or be graduating Spring 2025 within biology or a related field.
  • Experience in an academic biology lab environment as well as an understanding of basic biology principles is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness and want to learn.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The physical demands and work environment conditions outlined below represent those encountered by an employee while performing the essential functions of the Lab Technician Intern role. This role requires regular use of hands to handle, manipulate, or feel materials, as well as effective communication through talking and hearing. Interns will frequently stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally, lifting and moving objects weighing up to 100 pounds may be required, and specific vision abilities, including the ability to adjust focus, are necessary. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to general molecular biology/nucleic acid laboratory conditions including but not limited to, regular handling of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals and reagents, radioactive materials, and use of non-hazardous and potentially hazardous equipment. The work environment will be temperature and noise controlled. The working hours shall be generally 40 hours per week. Additionally, the workload may require overtime hours.
